How to remove a video background or green screen

Cut out a person or object, clean up green-screen edges, and place a second video behind the subject.

Choose the right removal method

Use Remove Background when there is no green screen and you want the app to find the subject. Use Green Screen when the background is one solid color. Chroma key is usually faster and more consistent for long clips.

1. Stack two videos

  1. Place the main video on the lower video track.
  2. Place the person, presenter, or object on an overlay track above it.
  3. Select the overlay clip before removing its background.

2. Remove the background

For automatic cutout, press Remove Background and preview a moving section—not only the first frame. For a green screen, choose the key color and adjust similarity until the green disappears.

Keep edges naturalIncrease similarity only enough to remove the background. Too much can erase hair, clothing, or objects that are close to the key color. Add a small amount of softness instead of pushing similarity too far.

3. Resize the presenter

Drag a corner handle to keep the correct shape. Move the presenter to a clear corner, and leave room for captions. Avoid covering faces, scores, or important controls in the main video.

4. Preview before export

  • Check fast hand movement and hair.
  • Look for green color spilling onto skin or clothes.
  • Watch the whole clip for a frame where the subject disappears.
  • Confirm the overlay begins and ends where you expect.

When automatic removal struggles

Use brighter, even lighting and make the subject different from the background. A plain wall is easier than a busy room. For future recordings, a well-lit green screen will usually produce the cleanest moving edge.
