How to record your screen and computer audio on Mac

Record an app, browser, Zoom, Discord, or the whole Mac screen with computer audio and an optional microphone.

Before you start

Save anything private on your screen and tell people on a call when you are recording. Some meetings, schools, workplaces, and locations require everyone’s permission.

1. Allow the two Mac permissions

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  2. Allow Trim Lab Studio under Screen & System Audio Recording.
  3. Allow Trim Lab Studio under Microphone if you want your voice.
  4. Quit and reopen the app after changing a permission.

2. Choose the audio you actually want

  • Everything: computer or app audio plus your microphone.
  • Computer / App Audio: only the sound shared by the selected screen, window, or app.
  • Microphone: only your selected microphone.
  • Video Only: no audio.
Recording Zoom, Discord, or a browser call?Choose the app or Entire Screen in Apple’s picker and turn on Audio before clicking Share. The playback-device menu does not choose the sound being recorded.

3. Match quality to the computer

Start with 1080p at 30 FPS for classes, meetings, and tutorials. Use 60 FPS for gameplay only when the Mac can keep up. A lower frame rate often looks smoother than a 60 FPS recording that drops frames.

4. Make a ten-second test

  1. Say a few words into the microphone.
  2. Play sound in the app you are recording.
  3. Stop and save.
  4. Open the file and confirm both sources are audible.

If the call audio is missing

Start again and check that Audio is enabled in Apple’s sharing picker. If the app does not appear, choose Entire Screen for the test. Headphones can prevent echo but do not replace the shared-audio switch.
